My initial training involved a traditional apprenticeship within mechanical engineering. Approximately 25 years ago my wife and I assisted with the construction of our first narrowboat which we designed and subsequently fitted out.

Shortly after we embarked upon a passage which involved a four year cruise from Chester to Oxford gaining experience within the marine industry on the way.

My practical experience has been gained in the operation of Tooleys Boatyard at Banbury which involved the repair and construction of narrowboats.

Further training has emcompassed in-house seminars and workshops with my professional association, the Yacht Designers & Surveyors Association (YDSA). Professional surveyors are obliged to keep abreast of new legislation including Boat Safety Standards, the Recreational Craft Directive and LPG codes of practice. I am able to carry out structural surveys relating to all mediums including steel, iron, GRP and timber.

As a full time, professional, marine surveyor my work is covered by professional indemnity insurance. I am required by my professional association to maintain Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
